Walter Schädlich (born April 15, 1922 in Hamborn ; † April 30, 2016 ) was a German sports teacher and national handball player. As a player he was twice world champion with the German national team and as a player- coach with Hamborn 07 he was once German champion in field handball .

Sports career

Walter Schädlich completed his first game in the DHB national team on April 1, 1951 against the selection of the then still independent Saarland. Up until his last international field handball match on September 30, 1956, the world-class player played 25 internationals and scored 105 goals. With the DHB team, Schädlich was twice field handball world champion. In the two finals in 1952 against Sweden (19: 8) and 1955 against Switzerland (25:13) he scored a total of ten goals. At the 1952 World Cup , he was the second best German goalscorer after Bernhard Kempa , who scored one more goal, with 26 goals . After the end of his career, Schädlich was the sole record national player for several years. He scored at least one goal in each of his 25 international appearances and is the fourth most successful attacker in the history of the national field handball team.

In 1958 he won the German field handball championship as a player-coach with his home club Hamborn 07 in front of 25,000 spectators in the Niederrhein stadium in Oberhausen . In the final, the "Löwen" defeated the favored VfL Wolfsburg 10: 9 (7: 5). During the jubilee drive from Oberhausen to Hamborn that followed, his fans honored him with banners with the words Treu und honest - Walter Schädlich!

After his active time, Walter Schädlich made a great contribution to the development of indoor handball, especially in the north of Duisburg. a. still active for Hamborn 07 and VfB Homberg, and as a trainer at Schwarz-Weiß Westende Hamborn and VfB Homberg. In the 1970/71 season he coached the Krefeld club TV Oppum in the indoor handball and field handball Bundesliga. His last game as an Oppumer coach was the field Bundesliga match against his home club Hamborn 07 on July 4, 1971. As a physical education teacher at Hamborn's Clauberg Gymnasium , he finally brought school and club sports together and introduced generations of students to handball.

Schadlich was also successful as a football coach. In 1957 he took over the first team from Hamborn 07, which at that time was in 5th place in the 2nd League West, and led them to the top of the table with a 5 point lead and thus to promotion to the Oberliga, the top German division at the time.

Trivia

In the 1949/50 season Walter Schädlich replaced the injured Hans Röhrig as the goalkeeper of the football league team of his club Hamborn 07 when he guarded the goal in four games in the Oberliga West , then the highest division. The Hamborner could not win a game with Schädlich in the goal (he conceded a total of eight goals in the four games), but played with the handball player in goal once (against SpVgg Erkenschwick) "to zero".

  • In 2003 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the then Lord Mayor of Duisburg, Bärbel Zieling .
  • A quadruple sports hall in Hamborn that went into operation in 2015 was named after Walter Schädlich .
