Osaragi Jirō

Osaragi Jirō ( Japanese 大佛 次郎 , civil: Nojiri Kiyohiko ( 野 尻 清 彦 ); born October 9, 1897 in Yokohama ; † April 30, 1973 ) was a Japanese writer.

The younger brother of the literary scholar and astronomer Nojiri Hōei proved his literary talent during his school days with the story Ichikō Romance ( 一 高 ロ マ ン ス , Ichikō Romansu ). After graduating from Tokyo University , he briefly taught at the Kamakura Girls' Higher School and worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before devoting himself entirely to literature.

Osaragi became known for popular historical novels such as Kurama Tengu ( 鞍馬 天狗 ), Teru Hi Kumoru Hi ( 照 る 日 く も る 日 ) and Akō Rōshi ( 赤 穂 浪 士 , about the 47 Rōnin ), which appeared as serial novels in newspapers and magazines. He described life in Japan after World War II in novels such as Shiroi Ane ( 白 い 姉 ), Kiribue ( 霧 笛 ) and Kikyō ( 帰 郷 ). He presented events in European history in the novels Dreyfus Jiken ( ド レ フ ュ ス 事件 , Dorefyusu Jiken , “The Dreyfus Affair ”), Boulanger Shōgun no Higeki ( ブ ウ ラ ン ジ ェ 将軍 の 悲劇 , Būranje Shōgun no Higeki ”) and, General “ The tragedy ”) and des Paris Moyu ( パ リ 燃 ゆ , Pari Moyu , "Paris is on fire", about the Paris Commune ).

In 1964 Osaragi was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year .

The Osaragi Jirō Prize , which has been awarded by the Asahi Shimbun since 1974, is also named after him .
