Baldwin II of Holland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baldwin II of Holland († April 30, 1196 in Mainz ) was Bishop of Utrecht and the son of Count Dietrich VI. from Holland .

Life

After he had been provost of the chapter in Oldenzaal for a while, and had held a similar position at St. Mary's Church in Utrecht, he succeeded the late Gottfried in the diocese of Utrecht in 1178.

His contemporaries extol him as a very meek man and extol his chastity in a way that strongly suspects that of his spiritual brothers. Despite his meekness, the count's son Baldwin showed courage in the administration of the worldly goods of the diocese. He was constantly fighting against the residents of Groningen and Drenthe , who often revolted against the power of the bishop of Utrecht. There was also a bloody clash between him and the Count von Geldern over the possession of a stretch of land called the Veluwe . In 1188 he reconciled himself at the Reichstag in Mainz , probably through the mediation of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa , with his opponent Otto von Geldern , who wanted to join the Third Crusade but, according to the terms of the time, had to be reconciled with his enemies beforehand .

Little is mentioned of Baldwin's spiritual activity. When he had to relinquish priority to the Archbishops of Trier and Verdun in Cologne in 1192 , where he was to order Bruno von Berg , Baldwin withdrew. After Otto von Geldern returned from the Holy Land , the dispute with him renewed. Baldwin went to Mainz to seek the help of Emperor Heinrich VI. to call, but died a few days after his arrival. He was buried in St. Martin's Church in Utrecht .
