from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried von Rhenen (nl. Godfried van Rhenen ) (partly also Govert van Rhenen ) († May 27, 1178 in Utrecht ) was Bishop of Utrecht from 1156 to 1178 .

Life

He came from the family of the Lords of Rhenen . This is located southeast of Utrecht . Godfried was canon in Utrecht and most recently cathedral provost .

In 1156 he was elected bishop in the presence of Friedrich Barbarossa . With his presence and his intervention, Frederick I prevented an ambivalent bishopric election.

He subsequently remained a loyal supporter of the Staufer party and as a result stood against the Pope. In 1160 and 1161 he followed Friedrich to Italy.

He protects his worldly possessions by building castles. He was a personally pious man. In the diocese of Utrecht he promoted the establishment of churches and monasteries. He was in contact with Hildegard von Bingen .

With the Counts of Holland there were conflicts over the episcopal rights in Friesland . In addition, there were disputes over the damming of the Rhine in 1165. Because Friedrich Barbarossa couldn't use another source of conflict, he put an end to these disputes.

Inside he fought for a long time for possession of the city of Groningen . This wanted to gain independence from the bishop after the burgrave's death. At times there were also conflicts with the city of Utrecht.

In 1170 the Zuidersee was formed by a flood disaster. As a result, he lost parts of his territory. Before his death he bequeathed the rule of Rhenen to the diocese.
