Roman Maciejewski (born February 28, 1910 in Berlin , † April 30, 1998 in Gothenburg ) was a Polish composer, pianist and conductor.
Life
Maciejewski had piano lessons from his mother from the age of five. He studied at the Stern Conservatory from 1916 to 1919 . He then continued his training in Poznan with Bohdan Zaleski (piano), Władysław Raczkowski (music theory), Kazimierz Sikorski (harmony and counterpoint ) and Stanisław Wiechowicz ( solfège ).
From 1930 he directed the Stanisław Moniuszko Choir in Poznan, with whom he went on concert tours through Poland and Germany. In 1932 he began studying at the Warsaw Music Academy with Karol Szymanowski , which he broke off in favor of a concert tour as a pianist through the Balkans. In 1934 he studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.
Maciejewski lived in Sweden from 1939 to 1961, where he composed several pieces of music for plays by Ingmar Bergman (including Albert Camus ' Kaligula ) and began composing his Missa pro defunctis , which he only finished fifteen years later. It was premiered at the 1960 International Festival of Contemporary Music in Warsaw.
In 1951 he moved to the USA and settled in Redondo Beach , California . There he was the organist of two Catholic churches and directed the Roman Choir . In 1977 he returned to Sweden and settled in Gothenburg.
