Wilhelm Abeken

Wilhelm Ludwig Abeken (born April 30, 1813 in Rudolstadt , † January 29, 1843 in Munich ) was a German classical archaeologist .

Life

Wilhelm Abeken, son of the philologist and teacher Bernhard Rudolf Abeken and brother of the political writer Hermann Abeken , received his school education in Osnabrück , where his father, who came from there, had been the high school director since 1815. He first studied Protestant theology in Berlin from 1833, but turned to archeology under the influence of Eduard Gerhard . He then studied in Göttingen with Karl Otfried Müller and received his doctorate in 1836. In 1836 he went to Rome and began studies there on the ancient population in Etruria , Samnium and Umbria , the results of which he recorded in the posthumously published work Central Italy before the times of Roman rule based on his monuments (1843). From 1837 to 1842 he worked as a librarian at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome. He returned to Germany in 1842 and died in Munich on January 29, 1843.
