Johann Melchior Schuler

Johann Melchior Schuler (born March 9, 1779 in Mollis , † April 30, 1859 in Erlinsbach ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and local researcher .

Life

Johann Melchior Schuler was the son of pastor Fridolin Schuler (* February 7, 1726, † April 30, 1796). His nephew was the doctor Fridolin Schuler .

He received elementary lessons from his father, who was also a school teacher in Mollis. In the period from 1796 to 1798 he received his theological training at the Collegium Humanitatis (today: Kantonsschule ) in Schaffhausen and was field preacher from 1798 to 1799 . After his ordination he became pastor in Siblingen in 1799 and stayed there until he became pastor in Filzbach-Obstalden in 1805 . After some hostility he went to Mönthal as a pastor in 1815 ; there he was also a teacher of German, history and geography at the Provisorey School in Brugg .

In 1817 he took over the parish in Bözberg until he became pastor in Erlinsbach in 1827.

From 1811 he was a member of the Glarus Cantonal School Council and from 1828 to 1835 he was the Aargau Education Council.

Johann Melchior Schuler married Francisca Catharina in 1799, daughter of the printer Johann Emanuel Hurter.

His estate is in the Aargau State Archives (see also: List of bequests in the Aargau State Archives ).

Theological work

Theologically, Johann Melchior Schuler was close to a rationalistic Enlightenment, which he interpreted as a direct continuation of the Reformation .

Public work

Johann Melchior Schuler was committed to the welfare of the poor and popular education, to this end he initiated numerous philanthropic and social reform projects, and he tried to improve school teacher training.

Writing

In Erlinsbach, Johann Melchior Schuler worked intensively as a Heinmat researcher with historical research and published various church-historical and regional studies, including the history of the state of Glarus in 1836 . Together with his friend Johannes Schulthess (1763-1836), he also worked on the first complete edition of Huldrych Zwingli's works , which appeared in 8 volumes from 1828 to 1861.

His most popular work was the eight-volume work Die Thaten und Sitten der Eidgenossen , which appeared from 1807 to 1857.
