Franz Hegi at the age of 76

Franz Hegi (born April 16, 1774 in Lausanne , † March 14, 1850 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter and engraver .

Life

Franz Hegi's family lived in Lausanne when he was born, where his mother, Eléonore Verdeil, came from. His father Johannes Hegi was a goldsmith , jeweler and copper engraver. In 1780 the family moved to Zurich. Here the young Franz Hegi learned the aquatint technique , which was invented between 1765 and 1768, from the painter Matthias Pfenninger (1739-1813) .

Hegi was known for his countless copperplate engravings and aquatints for New Year's leaves, almanacs and books. His pictures are now a valuable source for the history of Switzerland in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
