Cornelis Fransz. de Witt

Cornelis Fransz. de Witt (born April 30, 1545 in Dordrecht , † April 3, 1622 ibid) was a Dutch politician who came from the old Dordrecht family De Witt .

Life

Cornelis de Witt was born to Frans de Witt (1516–1565) and Liduwi van Beveren ; Jacob Fransz de Witt was his brother. After returning home from his travels to France and Italy , he fulfilled his first political office in 1575 as Schepen of the city of Dordrecht. From 1586 to 1620 De Witt was the ruling mayor of Holland's oldest city 19 times. During his reign he was also able to lay the foundation for the political power of his family, which they then held at the height of the Golden Age . In the political-religious power struggle between Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Moritz von Oranien , he was on the side of the governor (Moritz), to whom he owed his renewed appointment as mayor.

In addition to his municipal regent functions, Cornelis de Witt was Councilor of the Netherlands ( States General ), Council of the States of Holland and Friesland, Deputy in the Admiralty of Zeeland from 1596 to 1599, Councilor of the southern Netherlands and Councilor of Flanders (when he temporarily resided in Middelburg was). In 1602 De Witt was mentioned as a deputy of the States General at the siege of Grave .

De Witt was married first to Johanna Heymans, then in 1603 he married Kornelia van Beverwijck. He had a total of eleven children, five of whom died young. Two of his sons - Andries and Jacob - also became important politicians and statesmen in Holland.
