Rose Laurens (2007)

Rose Laurens , actually Rose Podwojny , (born March 4, 1953 in Paris ; † on the night of April 30, 2018 there ) was a French pop singer. Her greatest success was the 1983 single Africa .

Career

Rose Laurens began her musical career, at that time still under her maiden name Rose Podwojny, as the singer of the progressive rock band Sandrose . The band around the guitarist Jean-Pierre Alarcen released their only album in 1972, which bears the band name and is a classic of the genre, especially in France. However, personal and musical differences of opinion led to the breakup of the band at the end of the year.

Afterwards she met the composer Jean-Pierre Goussaud and the two became a couple not only musically. Under her first pseudonym Rose Merryl, the singer released her first solo single In Space, composed by Goussaud, in 1976 . Her first hit was in 1979 with the title Survivre after changing her name to Rose Laurens.

The following year she played the role of Fantine in the premiere of the successful musical Les Misérables in Paris; the performances and the album release made her better known. She was on the musical stage for over a year and then worked on her first solo album, which was released in 1982 under the title Déraisonnable . The very first single Africa developed into a big hit and million seller in France. The music was by Goussaud, the text by Jean-Michel Bériat. The title was number one in the unofficial charts . He was then accepted in English as Africa (Voodoo Master) (text: Elaine Stive) and published throughout Europe. The song was also very successful in this version and reached the top 3 in German-speaking countries.

With Mamy Yoko , Rose Laurens had another hit from the follow-up album Vivre , which also attracted attention abroad, but it remained an international one-hit wonder , despite another album entitled Africa - Voodoo Master with many English-language titles.

In 1986 she recorded songs for the album Écris ta vie sur moi , which were written by famous French musicians such as Francis Cabrel , Yves Simon and Yves Duteil . The composer was again her partner Goussaud, who shortly after became seriously ill with cancer. He died in 1990 after completing one last album together.

A few years later she appeared in the musical L'ombre d'un géant by François Valéry and, together with Sophie Delmas and Hanna H , had another chart hit in 2001 with the resulting title Pour aimer plus . Rose Laurens' last solo album was released in 2015. She succumbed to a long illness on the night of April 29th to 30th, 2018.
