Johann I. Thurzo

Johann I. T (h) urzo von Bethlemfalva (Hungarian: Thurzó János , Slovak: Ján T (h) urzo ; born April 30, 1437 in Leutschau ; † October 10, 1508 in Frauenbach ) was a patrician , merchant and mining entrepreneur .

Life

Johann Thurzo, whose father Georg († 1460) called himself Herr von Bethlenfalva (Bethelsdorf) since 1430, came from the Thurzo patrician family and grew up in the Spiš . After completing his studies in Padua , he successfully invested in Lower Hungarian ore mining and traded in gold and silver.

In 1463 he settled in Cracow , where he became a councilor in 1477 . In 1469 he established a steelworks in Mogiła and in 1475 he founded a mining union, which included numerous mines in what is now Central Slovakia, Moravia and Silesia . On September 14, 1478 he also bought into the Rammelsberg silver mine near Goslar . In 1495 he signed a contract with Jakob Fugger for the joint operation of a copper mine in Neusohl in Hungary. As its main trade , he led mining to a heyday.

In addition to the Augsburg trading house Fugger , with whom Thurzo was in intensive and cooperative business dealings as well as in family relationships, he was one of the most powerful entrepreneurs in Europe.

Johann Thurzo is the father of the Wroclaw Archbishop Johannes V. Thurzo , the Krakow mayor Georg III. Thurzo, who was married to Anna Fugger, and the Olomouc bishop Stanislaus I. Thurzo , who come from his first marriage to Ursula Böhm († 1483).

From his second marriage with Barbara Beck five more children come, including Katharina (1488–1535), who was married to the merchant Raymund Fugger (1489–1535) and was the mother of Johann Jakob Fugger (1516–1575).
