Darrell McCall
Darrell McCall (born April 30, 1940 in New Jasper , Ohio ) is a country singer who is considered an uncompromising traditionalist. Unimpressed by current fashion trends, he remains true to the classic honky tonk style.
In 1958 McCall moved to Nashville with his friend Johnny Paycheck . A first attempt at a career as a duo failed. McCall then worked as a studio singer for a while. After a short interlude with the Little Dippers group , he tried unsuccessfully as a pop musician. In 1963 he reached a middle spot in the country charts with A Stranger Was Here .
Darrel McCall retired from the music business for a few years, working as an actor and rodeo rider. In 1968 he made a fresh start as a country singer and produced some fairly successful singles and an album. His musical career was interrupted again in 1971 when his record company did not renew his contract. In 1974 a new label continued. Again only medium successes were achieved. Only in the years of the outlaw movement between 1975 and 1978 was McCall able to push himself to the fore.
Until the mid-eighties he produced singles for various labels, but these seldom passed 50th place on the country charts. His old-fashioned style - well respected by critics and colleagues - was not in demand with the general public. Darrell McCall can count on a small but loyal following of hardcore traditionalists. His name has a nice ring to it in the country scene.
