His brother Albert von Jäger was later the director of the Palatinate Railways .
In 1817, at the age of eight, he went to grammar school in Speyer and later to the Lyceum , where he turned to the newer languages, especially English, and he had two teachers, Karl Friedrich Neumann , later professor at the University of Munich , who there taught the Chinese language and literature, and the later Archbishop of Cologne , Johannes von Geissel .

In February 1847 his colleague Karl Felix Halm was transferred to Hadamar and, as his successor, the philological lectures at the Lyceum were assigned to him. The appointment of Professor Johann Kaspar Zeuss to the University of Munich meant that he was appointed Professor of History and Philology at the Lyceum on May 25, 1847.
As curator of the Kreis-Antiquarium and the collections of the Historical Association of the Palatinate , he engaged in scientific research from 1839 and published these as antiquarian treatises in the Heidelberg annual reports of 1843 and 1848; he also associated with Friedrich Creuzer , Johann Christian Felix Bähr , Laurenz Lersch and August Friedrich Pauly .
Rupert Jäger married Karoline, the daughter of the royal district medical councilor Carl Christian Gottlob Ehrmann (1778–1826), during his two-year stay in Kaiserslautern.
