Johann Heinrich Laurenz Lersch (born June 16, 1811 in Aachen , † May 12, 1849 in Bonn ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Lersch was the son of the Aachen brandy distiller and liquor dealer Johann Anton Lersch and Maria Gertrud Dupont and the older brother of the balneologist Bernhard Maximilian Lersch . After completing his school education in Aachen, he first studied in Bonn from 1829, then for three semesters in Berlin Classical Philology and History. When he returned to Bonn, he received his doctorate in 1836 with the dissertation De morum in Virgilii Aeneide habitu . His habilitation in the same year with the trial lecture on the influence of the Stoics on all sciences among the Romans was the first in the Philosophical Faculty of Bonn University . Like his numerous writings, his lectures also included archeology in addition to a wide range of philological topics.

At his suggestion, the Society of Friends of Antiquity was founded in the Rhineland , whose secretary was Lersch. In the (Bonn) yearbooks of this association, of which he became editor, he published 23 articles. In 1845 Lersch received a call as associate professor of ancient literature at the Lyceum in Braunsberg , which he did not follow; in Bonn he was finally appointed associate professor in 1848.

In March 1849 Lersch suffered a stroke, from which he however apparently recovered. He then succumbed to a second stroke on May 12, 1849.

Lersch was a member of the Cockchafer Association and the Istituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica .
