Epitaphrest in the garden of the Neuburg monastery

Brigitta von Pfalz-Simmern (born August 18, 1516 in Simmern , † April 30, 1562 in the Neuburg Abbey near Heidelberg ) was abbess in the Neuburg Abbey.

Life

Brigitta was a daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Johann II of Palatinate-Simmern (1492–1557) from his marriage to Beatrix (1492–1535), daughter of Margrave Christoph I of Baden . She was a sister of the Elector Friedrich III. from the Palatinate .

Brigitta entered the Benedictine monastery in Neuburg and was abbess there from 1552 until her death. In 1554 she leased the vineyards of the monastery in Weinheim . As abbess, Brigitta alienated the purpose of the monastery by promoting the Reformation in the monastery, which led to its accelerated decline. The nuns left the monastery and after Brigitta's death the monastery was closed in 1562 and converted into a noble fräuleinstift.

epitaph

The rest of her epitaph is currently walled in in the garden of the Neuburg Abbey (south side). In addition to the coat of arms of the Palatinate-Simmern and the margravial Baden, there is a portrait of Brigitta, which shows her in rather secular clothing; she had probably already taken off her dress by the end of her life. The epitaphrest was discovered and recovered in 1833 in the former pond of the monastery.
