Valentin Aloysius Franz Falk (born January 12, 1840 in Mainz , † September 22, 1909 in Klein-Winternheim ) was a German Catholic pastor , diocese archivist and church historian in Mainz.

Life

Franz Josef Falk was born on January 12, 1840. After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy and theology in the Mainz seminary , which was newly founded in 1851 ; among others with Paul Leopold Haffner and Regens Christoph Moufang . A year-long study abroad took him to the Catholic University of Leuven , where he deepened his knowledge of theology. He received on 15 August 1862. Mainz Cathedral , the priesthood by Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler .

In the following years he was employed as a chaplain in Nieder- Saulheim , Lorsch and St. Emmeran (Mainz) . During this time he wrote the book "The Lorsch Monastery". He then spent his remaining time as a parish administrator in St. Stephan in Gonsenheim , Nieder-Olm and St. Peter in Mainz, as well as a chaplain in Worms and, for a short time, as a parish administrator in Sauerschwabenheim .

In 1873 he was first appointed parish administrator and from May 10, 1874 was appointed local priest of the Catholic parish of Mombach . He worked here until 1887. The then only church in Mombach was expanded from 1883 to 1884 by adding a transept. This became necessary because the originally agricultural village experienced a strong increase in population due to industrialization from the middle of the 19th century. Under Falk, a new bell was also purchased in 1884 and the cross chapel from 1814 was renovated.

In 1886 he arranged for a branch of the Sisters of Divine Providence to be moved from the Finther monastery to Mombach for home nursing and for the education of small children. In addition, the sisters worked in a sewing and household school for the domestic education of young women.

Falk was transferred to Klein-Winternheim in 1887 . This was done at his own request, as he believed that he could better devote himself to his literary and church-historical activities there. In 1908 the Hessian Historical Commission Darmstadt decided to turn to the history of the diocese of Mainz , among other things , which subsequently led to the establishment of the Society for Middle Rhine Church History and the "Institute for Mainz Church History". Franz Falk is thus very early on in a series of church historians from Mainz such as Adam Gottron , Ludwig Lenhart and Anton Philipp Brück . His estate is in the Mainz Cathedral and Diocesan Archives.

Honors

In 1902 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Catholic theological faculty of the University of Münster . The Mainz-Mombach community honored Falk's memory by naming a path . The "Dr.-Falk-Weg" limits the area of the former parish center "Heilig-Geist" (today St. Kyrillos ) to the north. Klein-Winternheim honors him with the Pfarrer-Falk-Straße.
