Adam Gottron

Adam Bernhard Gottron (born October 11, 1889 in Mainz ; † October 29, 1971 there ) was a German Catholic priest , local and music historian and an honorary citizen of the city of Mainz .

life and work

Adam Gottron was a friend of Romano Guardini in his youth in Mainz and supported him with the youth team . After studying in Freiburg , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. in Gießen and Innsbruck he was ordained a priest in Mainz in 1917. From 1919 to 1922 he was assistant in the Konvikt in Dieburg , sub-rector at the Konvikt in Bensheim and chaplain to St. Ludwig in Darmstadt . In 1922 he became a religion teacher at the Liebig School in Darmstadt, and in 1927 student pastor at the TH Darmstadt . From 1933 until his retirement in 1954 he was a teacher for Catholic religious instruction at the Humanistic Gymnasium in Mainz . From 1933 to 1962 he was diocesan president of the Cecilia societies , and later of the church choirs in the diocese of Mainz .

In addition to his work as a religion teacher, Adam Gottron's research area was the history of church music in Kurmainz . In 1960 he received an honorary professorship for Middle Rhine music history with a focus on sacred music in Kurmainz at the University of Mainz . In 1961 he and Franz Bösken founded the Working Group for Middle Rhine Music History . On June 23, 1962 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Mainz . His grave is in the Mainz Cathedral Cemetery .
