(4864) Nimoy is an asteroid located in the main inner belt . It was discovered on September 2, 1988 by the Belgian astronomer Henri Debehogne at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809). There had been several sightings of the asteroid before: on September 18, 1957 under the provisional designation 1957 SA at the Goethe Link Observatory in Indiana , on May 22, 1968 (1968 KD), November 11, 1969 (1969 VD 1 ) and June 20, 1976 (1976 MG) at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj and on December 24, 1985 (1985 XZ 1 ) at the Palomar Observatory in California .

According to calculations, the mean diameter of (4864) Nimoy is almost 12 kilometers, the albedo of 0.054 (± 0.009) suggests a dark surface.

Mean distance from the sun ( major semi-axis ), eccentricity and inclination of the orbit plane of the asteroid lie within the respective limit values that are defined for the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa (also called Hertha family, according to (135) Hertha ).

(4864) Nimoy was named after the American actor , film director and author Leonard Nimoy on June 2, 2015 , a few months after his death. Nimoy was best known for his portrayal of the officer Spock in the series Starship Enterprise . The main outer belt asteroid (2309) Mr. Spock, on the other hand, was named in 1985 after a cat named after Spock.
