The Rebel ( German : The rebel , synonymous for the Confederates as "rebel states") is a US-based Western - television series , which was produced and aired from 1959 to 1961. The plot is partly set in flashbacks in the Civil War , the hero of the series is the former Confederate soldier Johnny Yuma, who was played by Nick Adams . The theme song The Rebel aka The Ballad of Johnny Yuma was interpreted by Johnny Cash , who also appeared in an episode. Guest stars were u. a. Leonard Nimoy and Dan Blocker as well as the country music singer Tex Ritter . The Spanish broadcast title was El rebelde . The series was not broadcast in Germany.

1867. After the end of the civil war, the Confederate cavalry veteran Johnny Yuma returns to his (fictional) Texan hometown. He finds out that his father Ned, who was the sheriff in the city, was killed by a gang of gangsters who now rule the place. Plagued by memories of the war, Johnny roams Texas fighting for justice , assisted by his revolver and his father's sawed-off shotgun . His trademark is the gray cap of the Confederate States Army . In flashbacks (staged as Yuma's memories) the rebel meets u. a. General Robert E. Lee ( George Macready ) at Appomattox (episode Johnny Yuma at Appomatox ).

Production notes

Nick Adams was involved in the design of the series as well as the scripts. The film was shot in Paramount Picture Studios. For Adams it was the most successful role of his career.
