Luscious Jackson live, 2014

Luscious Jackson is an alternative rock band formed in 1991 . It was named after the Philadelphia 76ers basketball player Lucious Jackson .

The original formation consisted of Jill Cunniff (vocals, bass), Gabrielle "Gabby" Glaser (vocals, guitar), Kate Schellenbach (drums) and Vivian Trimble (keyboards, vocals). Jill Cunniff and Gabby Glaser are the authors of most of the plays. Some tracks were also covered live, but they cannot be found on albums.

Between 1993 and 2000 they released an EP, three albums and ten singles on Grand Royal , the Beastie Boys label. The biggest hit was Naked Eye (1997, 36 on the Billboard Charts ). Other well-known pieces are Here, CitySong (NY State of the World), Under Your Skin and Ladyfingers.

Vivian Trimble left the group in 1998, and in 2000 (after releasing an album as a trio) the group officially announced their split.

A greatest hits compilation was released in early 2007 . It was announced in advance in autumn 2006 that the group had reunited and was working on new material. In addition, a solo album by Jill Cunniff was released in early 2007 under the title City Beach (in Germany, however, only available as an import).

history

Cunniff and Glaser released the first demo of Luscious Jackson in 1991 after opening their first live appearance for the Beastie Boys and Cypress Hill in New York. The Beastie Boys asked Luscious Jackson if they wanted to be the first band to release on their label Grand Royal .

Schellenbach (former member of the Beastie Boys) soon added the band on drums, Trimble took over the keyboards and the accompanying vocals.

Three tracks from the demo recordings and four new tracks were released on the 1992 EP In Search of Manny . Let Yourself Get Down and Daughters of the Kaos were released as promo singles. In addition, a video was shot for the title Life of Leisure contained on the EP . Later that year, the first headline appearance followed at the Wetlands Club.

After two new tracks had been released by the Daughters-of-the-Kaos EP in the run-up to the following album , Luscious Jackson released her debut album Natural Ingredients (1994). The album contains three smaller hits with CitySong (NY State of the World), Deep Shag and Here . The videos for all three singles were shown on MTV .

Between 1994 and 1995, Luscious Jackson took part in the Lollapalooza Tour and was seen as a guest on various television programs such as Saturday Night Live and MTVs 120 Minutes, as well as in shows on the Nickelodeon network .

During the 1995 tour, Cunniff and Trimble took out a collection of quiet acoustic pieces under the name Kostars , entitled Klassics with "K" . The album was released in 1996 and included contributions from Schellenbach and Glaser, as well as Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo (known as Gene and Dean from the band Ween ).

While Luscious Jackson was promoting the release of their second album Fever In, Fever Out , the band had their first Top 40 hit on the Billboard charts with Naked Eye . The following two singles Under Your Skin and Why Do I Lie? were featured on the soundtrack for the Gus Van Sant film Good Will Hunting .

The band members wanted to pursue other projects as a result. Vivian Trimble left the group. Two years later she released an album called Dusty Trails with Josephine Wiggs (formerly with The Breeders ) .

In 1999, Luscious Jackson released (now as a trio) their third album, Electric Honey. The single Ladyfingers was a moderate success, the accompanying video ran on Heavy Rotation on VH1 and in Germany also on Viva Zwei . The second single, Nervous Breakthrough , was released without a video and was not commercially available. The planned release of Devotion as the third single was discarded despite an already prepared radio version, as interest in the album decreased significantly.

In 2000 the band officially announced that they would no longer record songs and go on tour.

However, six years later, the band announced their reunion plans. In February a greatest hits compilation by Luscious Jackson was released on Capitol Records with tracks from the years 1992 to 1999. In addition, a solo album by Jill Cunniff called City Beach was released . Gabby Glaser released a solo album in 2007 under the title Gimme Splash .
