album Bright lights

Lights is a song by British singer Ellie Goulding that appeared on the album Bright Lights , a re-release of her debut album Lights (2010). The song was released in the UK on March 13, 2011 as the sixth single from the album, while it was released as the first single in the US . In May 2012, Lights was certified platinum in the US for sales above one million units. On February 15, 2013 the single was re-released in Germany.

background

Lights was originally supposed to appear on September 8, 2010. However, Goulding later announced on her Twitter page that the publication would be postponed to November 1, 2010. The release of the single was, however, in favor of the song Your Song , a cover of the song of the same name by Elton John , postponed, as this was part of a large Christmas advertising campaign.

In January 2011 she announced that Lights would follow as the next single. A download EP was released on March 13, 2011 in the United Kingdom. This contained the single Lights and an acoustic cover of Rihanna's world hit Only Girl (In the World) , which Goulding played on December 10, 2011 on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge .

criticism

Horatia Harrod from The Daily Telegraph said about the song: “Threaded with dark thoughts, but set to an airy pop production bordering on polite. Her voice is the real star. She has the magical ability, not unlike her heroine, Björk , to sing with a sort of controlled tremulousness: her voice aches with vulnerability but never breaks. " The Guardian critic Johnny Dee wrote:" a welcome return to her patented folky-pop- with-some-tasteful-drum-and-bass-wobble sound. "

Music video

The video for Lights was shot by Sophie Muller in September 2010 and officially published on January 20, 2011 on Goulding's YouTube channel. It shows Goulding dancing and playing the drums, being surrounded by many light effects and laser beams while singing. The lighting effects were created by a small group of students from Middlesex University .

Appearances

Goulding sang the song on the Alan Carr: Chatty Man Show in February 2011. She also appeared on the Saturday session on Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 afternoon show on February 26, 2011, where she sang Lights . She also sang Lights on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge on March 12, 2011, along with a cover version of José González's version of The Knifes Heartbeats .

To promote the single in the US, Goulding sang the song live on Saturday Night Live on May 7, 2011 with Your Song . On January 18, 2012, she sang the single on the Late Show with David Letterman . On April 11, 2012, she sang the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

In Germany, Goulding performed on January 12, 2013 as part of Schlag den Raab .
