The Navy Pier is an approximately one kilometer long pier in Lake Michigan in the Near North Side , a district of Chicago . The pier was built in 1916 at a cost of $ 4,500,000. It was part of the Burnham plan developed by architect and city planner Daniel Burnham . The pier was planned and built as Municipal Pier # 2 . The Navy Pier was initially used for cargo handling for Great Lakes ships and as a warehouse. Excursion boats also docked there. Even then, parts of the pier were used for local recreation with playgrounds, leisure facilities with picnic areas, restaurants and a dance hall.
Today, Navy Pier is the biggest tourist attraction in Chicago and is home to, among others, the Chicago Childrens Museum , an IMAX movie theater and the 47.5-meter-high Ferris wheel Ferris Wheel . On September 13, 1979, Navy Pier was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
