Alcopa NV / SA (formerly Moorkens ) is an automobile and two-wheeler dealer and former automobile manufacturer based in Kontich, Belgium . The name Alcopa of the family company stands for Albert & Constance Participation .

history

The company was founded in 1937 by Albert Moorkens and his wife Constance as Ets. Moorkens SA founded. Initially, the focus was on motorcycle production and trade. Moorkens had been the motorcycle agency for BMW since 1958 and received the assembly and sales rights for the BMW Isetta in January 1959 .

When the BMW 700 was phased out, Moorkens ran into financial difficulties. As a result, an agreement was reached with BMW to manufacture an additional 2,300 mid-range vehicles, which were primarily to be delivered to the UK as right-hand drive vehicles . In addition, vehicles continued to be assembled for the Belgian market.

By 1973, 57,000 CKD sets from various BMW series had been delivered to Moorkens. The finished vehicles were also exported to other markets. After the sales company Moorkens Frères du Import SA began importing Mitsubishi vehicles in 1974 without the consent of BMW AG , BMW terminated the contracts in November 1974. Other sources date the end of the business relationship with BMW to 1972.

In 1985, Alcopa took over the company Buro Market and established an office furniture division, which was sold again in 2016. The two-wheeler business has been run by the subsidiary Moteo since 2008 . In 2017, the automotive (formerly Alcadis ) and motorcycle import ( Moteo ) divisions were merged in the new Alcomotive division , which sells 4 vehicle brands and 5 motorcycle brands in 8 countries. In 2018, Benelli was added as the sixth motorcycle brand.

The company has been headed by Axel Moorkens since 2014.

Other products sold include electric bicycles, outboard motors, and spare parts and accessories. Further business areas are insurance, leasing and maintenance contracts.

In 2017, Alcopa had total sales of EUR 2.01 billion and more than 2000 employees in 150 subsidiaries in 19 countries. 45% of sales are attributable to the Alcomotive division and 63% of total sales to the home country Belgium.

Brands and models

The BMW vehicles produced included the BMW 300 (Isetta) , 600 , 700 , 1602 and 2002 .

Other imported brands besides Mitsubishi (1974) were Suzuki (1978) and Hyundai (also 1978). Moorkens was the first European company to sign a distribution agreement with Hyundai. The cooperation with Mitsubishi ended in 2003. The current portfolio includes SsangYong (since 2011) and Isuzu (since 2005).

In 1958, Moorkens was the first European importer of Suzuki motorcycles in the two-wheeler sector. Moorkens has been an importer and dealer for Peugeot two-wheelers since 1978 .
