Location search in Europe

The construction of the new plant was announced in 2002 when the Hyundai Motor Company signed up as a sponsor of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and announced that it would build a vehicle production plant in Europe whose products were specifically intended for European markets. So the small series assembly of the Hyundai Grandeur should take place there first , which had been promised to the members of the Olympic Committee during the announcement . But the date was postponed because Hyundai could not agree on a specific building site. In the end, the grandeurs only had imported vehicles.

So the disagreement dragged on over the years until new target points were created in the summer of 2005. The future production facility should be located in a central location on the continent of Europe . Furthermore, the plant should be located in the immediate vicinity of the Slovak plant of Kia Motors Slovakia near Žilina , as this will be responsible for engine construction. The transmission , however, wanted to Hyundai to build the new plant. So Hyundai declared it to be an official sister plant. The Rüsselsheim-based Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center GmbH, founded in 2003, was responsible for the design and development of the vehicles . Between 65 and 70 percent of the vehicle parts used are said to come from the production of Czech automotive suppliers . This should create 4,000 more jobs in the automotive industry, which would increase to 11,000 by 2011.

In spring 2006, the final choice fell on a 200-hectare site in Nošovice in the Czech Republic, with the short distance of 50 km from the Kia plant said to have been the decisive factor. Up to 300,000 vehicles should be built here annually. An investment of 1 billion euros was planned for the construction. In fact, however, the costs rose to around 1.2 billion euros by the time the construction work was completed.

history

The company was founded on July 7, 2006, although construction work did not start until April 2007. It took 18 months for the construction work to be completed in September 2008. Before that, however, more than 1,100 trees had to be moved to another location.

Work in the Czech plant finally started in April 2008 with the pre-production of the Hyundai i30 . Initially, CKD kits from Ulsan production were used, but gradually the components from local production were used to better coordinate the production processes. Enclosed, a small number of the Hyundai Sonata and the new Hyundai Coupé had been built to utilize production capacity . The serial production of the i30 finally began on November 3, 2008. A combination variant, Hyundai i30 cw called, followed in February. He replaced the coupe. The Kia Venga followed as the third product in September. He finished assembling the Sonata.

At the end of September 2010, Hyundai announced that it would introduce a third shift to enable the production of a fourth car model. This was already implemented in the following month. The Hyundai ix20 rolled off the production line as a sister model to the Kia Venga. The maximum production capacity increased to 300,000 units. Due to the fact that the Czech plant can only assemble a maximum of four car models on the same assembly line, Hyundai relocated the production of the Vengas to the Slovak Kia plant in order to favor the production of the Hyundai ix35 . Production of the second generation Hyundai i30 began in January 2012 . The one millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line in June 2013, and the three millionth in May 2019.
