Scrapping bonus

A scrapping bonus is government financial compensation for scrapping a motor vehicle . It is granted under different conditions in different countries or is in the introductory phase. The conditions usually include the purchase of a new car and a certain period of ownership of the old vehicle.

Basics

Scrapping premiums (also known as “scrapping premiums” ) were already being considered in the 1990s in order to replace older vehicles without catalytic converters and / or with high CO 2 emissions with fuel-saving, new emission standards and thus come closer to the Kyoto targets .

Triggered by the economic crisis of 2008/2009 , which also hit the auto industry badly, the black and red federal government decided in January 2009 to grant an environmental bonus of 2,500 euros for certain vehicles (car at least 9 years old; the car had to be kept for at least 1 year be approved). The aim was to stimulate the economy. So-called pull-forward effects and deadweight effects (as well as an expected decline in sales after the end of the premium) was accepted by the government. A CO 2 reduction was not the primary goal.

Initially, the government approved funding of 1.5 billion euros. After 600,000 funding applications, this prize pool was exhausted. After this happened quickly, the government approved a further 3.5 billion euros.

On December 4, 2008, the French government introduced a scrapping bonus (1,000 euros for scrapping a car that is at least ten years old and buying a new car that emits a maximum of 160 grams of CO 2 per kilometer).
