The Emil Frey Group is a group of companies mainly active in the automotive trade and based in Switzerland . The centerpiece is Emil Frey AG , founded in 1924 by Emil Frey and headquartered in Zurich, a repair shop for cars. The group of companies also includes various companies that provide services for everything to do with cars and in the areas of finance and insurance.

The company is wholly privately owned by the founding family and publishes very limited business figures. According to the Handelszeitung, the group employed more than 22,000 people in 2019 and generated sales of around 11 billion Swiss francs. Since 2017, the group has been the largest car dealer in Europe with 678 locations.

The group is active as an importer for the French PSA group in six Central European countries; for Subaru in addition to Switzerland also in France , Poland , Hungary , the Czech Republic and Germany . Mitsubishi is also imported into Germany, France and Hungary ; Frey imports Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Croatia , Serbia , Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina under the company name Star Import.

In Switzerland, Emil Frey AG acts as an importer and dealer for numerous brands such as Toyota , Lexus , Subaru, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, Jaguar , Land Rover and Kia.

Other business areas include leasing, company fleets, financing, parts and logistics, parking lot management (Apcoa), rental cars (Hertz), car washes (Best Carwash), classic car care, driving safety schools and the import and sale of Kawasaki motorcycles.

In Germany, the Emil Frey Group is active with car dealerships of various brands at 84 locations and 4,400 employees (as of August 2016). Vehicles of the following brands are sold:

In 2001, the Stuttgart-based Schwabengarage belonging to the Emil Frey Group was the largest Ford dealer in the world.

The Emil Frey Group has been Mitsubishi's sole importer for Germany since February 2014 . Emil Frey planned to become a majority shareholder in the current Mitsubishi Motors Deutschland GmbH, which was renamed "MMD Automobile GmbH (MMDA)". Mitsubishi Motors Europe planned to hold a strategic minority stake of 24.9 percent.
