history

The trade newspaper was created in 1861 from the merger of the Schweizerische Handels- und Gewerbe-Zeitung with the archive for Swiss statistics and appeared in the first few years as the Swiss railway and trade newspaper . The reporting focused on the railways and banking.

After almost 90 years the paper was facing financial ruin. Paul Eisenring , who was only 26 years old , succeeded in attracting new investors and restructuring the Handelszeitung . As editor-in-chief and director (1950–1968) and then until 1997 as a member of the administrative board, he managed the newspaper until shortly before it was sold to Axel Springer.
