A dead heat ( Engl. Dead heat ) is simultaneously achieve the first goal, a race result in which two or more participants. This designation is used for races in motor sports , running, etc. It originally comes from horse racing , as the bookmakers described an undecided race outcome as "dead". In the case of dead races, the prize money will be divided accordingly (for details see Sweepstakes or Calcutta auction ).

Dead races and betting

Betting with bookmakers

In the event of a dead race, the bookmakers reduce the payouts on winning bets as follows:

Is there e.g. If , for example, there are two winners, the gross quota is halved to calculate the payout amount . If the rate is z. B. 3.00, the rate is 1.50.

This procedure is motivated as follows: If a single winner were determined between the two winners by drawing lots, the bettor would receive the full payout amount (i.e. stake times the odds) in half of the cases, but nothing in the other half. On average, the customer therefore receives 1/2 stake times quota.

In a dead race it can happen that a bettor gets back less than his stake despite his correct prediction. B. 1.60, the customer receives 80 cents back for every euro wagered.

If there are three winners, the quota is divided into three, etc.

In competitions in which only two starters or teams take part and no tie rate is offered, the stake will be refunded in the event of a dead race (this also applies to bets on the totalizator ).

Outright bets

The procedure for winning bets is analogous to the procedure for bookmaker bets:

Example : € 2000 and € 1000 were placed on the winning horses Cherry and Black Dream, and € 6000 on all starters. This amount, the so-called gross pool , is reduced by the take out as usual , so that a net pool of z. B. € 5000 is distributed to the winners. The prize pool is now divided into equal parts, depending on the number of winners in the dead race, i.e. € 2500 each.
The win rate is thus calculated as 2500/2000 = 1.25 for Cherry and 2500/1000 = 2.50 for Black Dream.
A betting participant who z. For example, if you have placed € 20 on Cherry, you will receive 1.25 € 20 = € 25 back, and your net profit will be € 5.

In the same way, in the case of a dead race, the odds for two and three bets are determined - the winning predictions take the place of the winning horses in the calculation.

Place bets

The calculation of the odds for place bets in a dead race is explained using a race with three places.

If two horses are victorious at the same time and there is a clear third place, the place quotas can be determined as usual. It does not matter which of the two horses is rated first or second. The same applies to the highly unusual case of a dead race with three winners.

The following example requires a special procedure.

Example : The horses Cherry and Black Dream take first and second place, Morning Star and Doreen together take third place. The stakes on these horses are € 2000, € 1000 and € 800 and € 200; A total of € 6000 is placed on all starters. This amount will now be reduced again by the so-called take out , so that € 5000 will be distributed to the winners.
From this amount the sum of the stakes on the two horses placed first and half of the stakes on the two third placed horses, i.e. a total of 3500 €, will be deducted.
The remaining € 1,500 will now be divided into three pots of € 500 according to the three prizes; the pot for third place is now further divided into two times 250 €, corresponding to the number of horses in this place.
The net quota for the winning horse Cherry is 500/2000 = 0.25; the gross quota is obtained by adding 1, it is therefore 1.25. A betting participant who z. For example, if you bet € 20 on Cherry , you will get back 1.25 € 20 = € 25, and your net profit will be € 5 or 0.25 € 20.
The space quota for Black Dream is calculated analogously with 500/1000 = 0.5; the gross quota is therefore 1.5.
To calculate the odds for the two horses in the dead race, Morning Star and Doreen , you first determine the quotients 250/800 and 250/200 and then add 1/2 each (for the horses in the dead race only half the stake is required refunded) and thus receives the values 0.8125 and 1.75.
