Herbert Lang (publisher)
Herbert Lang (born March 25, 1898 in Reiden ; † June 11, 1975 in Bern ; hometowns of Oftringen and Reiden) was a Swiss bookseller and publisher .
Life
Lang was reformed, the son of Ana Bois and the cotton manufacturer Albert Emil Lang. In 1921 he married Louise Hofer. He graduated from the Geneva Collège Calvin and graduated from the Neuchâtel Business School in 1918 . He gained professional experience in the book trade and publishing industry before he and his wife bought a bookstore in Bern in 1921. With the affiliation of an antiquarian bookshop and, from 1931, a publishing house, they founded Herbert Lang & Cie . The publisher initially devoted itself to insurance literature as well as historical and theological writings, then to series of various humanities and social sciences. From 1939 to 1945, Lang headed the book trade section of the Swiss censorship authority during the Second World War . From 1948 to 1949 he was president of the Swiss Booksellers Association . Lang was also a co-founder of the Bern Booksellers School and the Scholarship Fund for the Swiss Book Trade . After the Second World War , Lang initiated the Swiss book donation to support war-damaged libraries.
