Victor "Vic" Wilson (born April 14, 1931 in Kingston-upon-Hull , † January 14, 2001 in Gerrards Cross ) was a British racing driver .

Career

Vic Wilson was born in England but spent the first twenty years of his life in South Africa . It began its career in the late 1950s and initially drove touring car races in Rhodesia and South Africa. His first vehicles were machine guns and a Lotus XI .

Wilson came to Europe and met Dick Gibson , who was also a racing driver. The two started racing together. In 1960, this friendship even led Wilson into Formula 1 . For his friend's team, Wilson drove the 1960 Italian Grand Prix in Monza . Wilson started the race with a Cooper T43 - Climax from 16th and last place on the grid and soon retired after a defect in the oil pump.

Wilson was never really serious about racing, although he was said to have talent. Between 1961 and 1963 he stayed away from the racetracks for three years. His cousin Bernhard White brought him back to motorsport. White had a racing team in the 1960s that started various racing series. Wilson drove a Ferrari 250LM in the sports car world championship.

In 1966 he was scheduled to be the regular driver of the team that wanted to compete in Formula 1 with vehicles from BRM under the name Chamaco Collect . Wilson drove the training for the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps in 1966 , but was replaced by Bob Bondurant just before the race .

Wilson died in a car accident in 2001.
