Giovanni Petrucci (nickname Gianni Petrucci ; born July 19, 1954 in Rome ) is an Italian politician and sports politician.

Career

After studying and exams in political science in Rome, he devoted himself to sports politics; from 1977 to 1985 he was general secretary of the Italian Basketball Federation , then until 1992 general secretary of the Italian Football Federation . In 1991 he took a six-month leave of absence in order to lead AS Roma out of the crisis as full-time Vice President . From 1992 to 1999 he was (full-time) President of the Italian Basketball Federation. From 1999 to 2013 he was President of the National Olympic Committee ( CONI ) in four terms . 2000-2001 he was also extraordinary commissioner of the Italian Football Association. In 2012, he was elected mayor of San Felice Circeo by a center-left coalition . In 2013 he resigned as President of CONI, as he had to return Rome’s application for the 2020 Olympic Games due to the financial crisis and thereby lost the trust of the northern Italian association representatives in particular. In 2013 he was re-elected President of the Italian Basketball Federation.
