Detail from a self-portrait

Ernestine Charlotte von Nassau-Siegen (born October 23, 1623 , † August 15, 1668 in Mengerskirchen ) was a painter.

family

She was a daughter of Count Johann VIII of Nassau-Siegen and the first of three wives of Moritz Heinrich von Nassau-Hadamar , the second prince of the younger Ottonian line of the House of Nassau in Hadamar . The marriage took place on January 30, 1650 in Brussels .

Life

She was probably born in Brussels and spent her youth there. She can be seen in a painting by Anthony van Dyck at the age of eleven . Originally she tended towards monastery life, but after an engagement period of nine years married her cousin Moritz Heinrich von Nassau-Hadamar in 1650. The move from Brussels to the German province was probably difficult for her and she suffered from the weather, pregnancies and illnesses.

She was artistically gifted and probably received painting lessons from an artist close to van Dyck's circle. In particular, she painted portraits of women. These were created as individual pieces and not as a series. In doing so, she was guided by role models from other artists. Some of her pictures have survived and are in the Lobkowicz Collection in Prague.
