The Elbe island Veddel has belonged to Hamburg since 1768 through the Gottorp Treaty . On June 22, 1894, the village of Veddel was incorporated into the city of Hamburg. Today, the inhabited eastern part of the island, formerly known as the Kleine Veddel , the Peute and part of the Wilhelmsburg island form the Hamburg-Veddel district , while the western part, the former Große Veddel, belongs to the former Hamburg free port and the Hamburg-Kleiner Grasbrook district. The islands of Große Veddel and Kleiner Grasbrook have merged into the port facilities .
