The northern district is part of the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia and the Aachen district court and is congruent with the employment agency in Alsdorf, the northern district police station with main guard in Alsdorf and the local edition of the northern district of Aachener Nachrichten and Aachener Zeitung with its editorial office in Alsdorf. Neighboring towns in the clockwise direction are Kerkrade (NL), Übach-Palenberg , Geilenkirchen , Linnich , Aldenhoven , Eschweiler and Aachen . The worm is an important flowing water .

The northern district was shaped by the coal mining in the so-called worm area with, among others, the EBV pits Adolf , Anna , Carl Alexander and Gouley , which turned the small farming villages into towns, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries.
