The Marshal of the Russian Federation ( Russian Маршал Росси́йской Федера́ции , Marshal Rossijskoj Federazii ) is the highest rank within the Russian armed forces . The only bearer of this rank has been the Russian officer Igor Dmitrijewitsch Sergejew .
history
It was introduced on February 11, 1993 as a result of the dissolution of the Soviet Union . The rank follows immediately above the army general or the naval admiral (in translations occasionally also admiral of the fleet ) and, according to one's own understanding, is in the tradition of the marshal of the Soviet Union . Only in 1997 was the rank awarded for the first time and so far only to the former Defense Minister Igor Dmitrijewitsch Sergejew , who was previously Army General and Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces .
Rank description
The Marshal of the Russian Federation is higher in rank than the Army General ( General , OF-9), the Colonel General (here Lieutenant General , OF-8), Lieutenant General (here Major General , OF-7) and finally the Major General (here Brigadier General , OF- 6). This rank is comparable to the Field marshal or General of the Army in the American armed forces .
The badge of rank is similar to that of the Marshal of the Soviet Union , with the coat of arms of the Soviet Union being replaced by the Russian double-headed eagle . The characteristic marshal star, as a symbol of the highest ranking officer, was retained.
