Marshal of the branch , and Marshal of the branch of service ( Russian Маршал рода войск , English Marshal of the branch, or Marshal of the branch of service ) was the name given to an independent ranking class of the rank group of generals of the Armed Forces of the USSR .

Marshal of the military branch was also the lowest rank of marshal in the Red Army and later in the Soviet Army from 1943 to 1974, which according to today's understanding would correspond to NATO rank OF9 . The marshal of the armed forces was nominally on an equal footing with the Army General OF9, but had no command and control over a large association XXXX.

Introduction and precedence

The name Marshal of the weapon genre was based on the semantics general of the weapon genre of the German armed forces at that time . The introduction of the rank class began on January 16, 1943 with the introduction of the ranks Marshal of the Airmen , - the artillery and - the armored forces.

On October 9, 1943, the ranks of Marshal of the Engineer Troops and the Telecommunications Troops were introduced. All five ranks corresponded to the general OF9 rank army general .

Award

Just two days after the introduction of the new rank class, on January 18, 1943, NN Woponow was promoted to Marshal of the Artillery. In the course of the same year, the aviation generals AA Nowykow (March 17) and AE Golowanow (August 3) were promoted to "Marshal of the Aviators". As early as February 21, 1944, both were promoted to "Chief Marshal of Aviators". At the same time, the tank generals PA Rotminstrov and JB Fedorenko were promoted to Marshal of the Armored Forces. MP Vorobyov was promoted to Marshal of the Engineer Troops, and IT Perersypkin was promoted to Marshal of the Intelligence Forces.

As a rule, officers who had previously held the rank of Colonel General OF8, were eligible for promotion or were up for promotion to Army General OF9 were assigned to this rank class , but were out of the question for use as commander, for example of an army or comparable large units XXXX, or for whom no corresponding commander was considered - Service post was available. With the promotion to Marshal of the Armed Forces a future advance to Marshal of the Soviet Union OF10 was usually excluded. For colonel-generals who were promoted to army general, this career prospect remained open.

Badge of rank

The design, design and way of wearing the badge in the form of shoulder pieces were confirmed on February 6, 1943 and were based on the shoulder piece Marshal of the Soviet Union.

In contrast to the shoulder piece "Army General" with four general stars arranged in a row, a large marshal star and the relevant symbol of the weapon type were specified for the shoulder piece "General der Waffengenus". According to the “Order of the People's Commissar of the USSR for Defense” of October 26, 1943, the star diameter for the new marshal of the weapon branch was reduced from 50 mm to 40 mm. The collar badge was a special "Marshal Star Small", which, in contrast to the "Marshal Star Large" , was a little smaller for the two OF10 ranks Marshal of the Soviet Union and Admiral of the Soviet Union and had no diamonds between the five points. The collar was in the color of the weapon type in question. The permission to carry the "Marshal Star Small" became from 1962 for the OF9 flag officer of the fleet admiral and from 1974 for the OF9 rank "army general".

Dismantling and abandonment

Marshal of the Armored Forces was given up and deleted as a rank and rank in 1984. The last officer to be awarded the rank of Marshal of Aviators was the Defense Minister of the USSR, EI Shaposhnikov, in August 1991.

In the "Law of the Russian Federation on Compulsory Military Service and Military Service" (No .: 4455-I of March 25, 1993) the following stipulations are finally decreed.

  • The ranks Marshal of the Airmen, Marshal of the Artillery, Marshal of the Engineer Forces, Marshal of the Intelligence Force and Chief Marshal of the Armed Forces have been removed from the regular roles of the ranks of the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
  • The highest rank of general is the army general
  • The highest rank of Marshal is the Marshal of the Russian Federation
