Master Sergeant is a military grade in the civil servant career of the English speaking armed forces .

The Master Sergeant of the United States Army (abbreviation MSG ) has the NATO rank code OR-8. The usual salutation is "Sergeant".

He is the fifth rank of non-commissioned officer and the second so-called "senior non-commissioned officer" of the Army.

In the Bundeswehr , this rank corresponds to the staff sergeant , while in the Austrian armed forces the senior staff sergeant takes this position.

From the rank of Master Sergeant a soldier of the US Air Force can be used as First Sergeant , this is a special service position for the longest serving sergeant in a unit who is directly subordinate to the unit commander, similar to the company sergeant of the German Armed Forces .

To distinguish it, the First Sergeant's rank badge is supplemented by the so-called French diamond.
