Grade

Staff Sergeant (depending on the specialty Staff Chief Petty Officer (StOBtsm) bar top helmsman , staff chief mechanic , etc.) was a rank of the German Navy , which, by decision of 16th February 1939 the rank Sergeant etc. (old style) replaced. After at least three years of service as a senior boatman and ten years of total service, senior boatmen of the Kriegsmarine were promoted to the StOBm. With the disappearance of the rank of deck officers , the sergeant major was the highest rank of the portepee sergeants.

According to today's NATO rank codes , this range would be comparable to OR-8, but should not be confused with the Bundeswehr rank of Oberstabsbootsmann of the German Navy .
