Meister was the lowest rank of sergeant in the rank group of NCOs in the People's Navy of the former National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic , which corresponds to the rank of " boatswain " in the Bundeswehr . In the other NVA armed forces, the rank of sergeant was equal to this nautical rank of "master" . The next higher rank was the Obermeister , the lower rank the Obermaat .

According to today's NATO rank codes , the Obermeister would be comparable to OR-6.
