Meister was the lowest rank of sergeant in the rank group of NCOs in the People's Navy of the former National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic , which corresponds to the rank of " boatswain " in the Bundeswehr . In the other NVA armed forces, the rank of sergeant was equal to this nautical rank of "master" . The next higher rank was the Obermeister , the lower rank the Obermaat .
According to today's NATO rank codes , the Obermeister would be comparable to OR-6.

Specialty
- The rank of Master of the People's Navy is not to be confused with the rank of Master of the VP , who in the People's Police was the second highest rank in the rank group of NCOs with Portepee and was equivalent to the Oberfeldwebel der NVA (OR-7).
- Comparable ranks are the boatswain of the Navy until 1945 and the boatswain of the German Navy of the Bundeswehr .
