Lighten
Lighter (from Middle High German līhtern, "lighter, lighter") means to make a loaded ship lighter by removing part of the cargo with the aim of reducing the ship's draft (i.e. its unloading depth). This is necessary if, due to low water (the inland waterway operators also call it “small water”), it is no longer possible to continue with the original unloading depth due to the risk of grounding.
variants
Lightening from ship to ship: Part of the cargo is reloaded from one ship to another.
Lighter from ship to stock: Forwarding agents, shipping companies and other companies that have settled in the port can also lighten from ship to stock. The removed part of the load is temporarily stored and later transported on.
Lightening from ship to truck or train: Especially goods that have to be delivered as punctually as possible are also moved from ship to truck or train and then delivered directly to their destination.
