The Communauté d'agglomération Royan Atlantique (CARA) is a French association of municipalities with the legal form of a Communauté d'agglomération in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It was founded on December 10, 2001 and comprises 33 parishes. The administrative headquarters are in the city of Royan .

location

The community association extends along the Gironde estuary north, east and south of the city of Royan and is part of the historic cultural landscape of the Saintonge .

landscape

From sea level to a maximum of about 70 meters above sea level. d. M. extending landscape has a slightly undulating profile. The soils are largely sandy, which is due to sea and / or river deposits. The soils are used for agriculture and cattle breeding and so fields and meadows determine the landscape.

climate

A rather balanced and mild maritime climate is predominant, which is determined by the Atlantic. The maximum daytime temperatures in summer reach 30 to 35 ° C; in winter they are between 10 and 15 ° C. Night or even day frosts are almost unknown.

economy

The soils of the association of municipalities belong to the Bons Bois and Fins Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region . Because of the decline in sales of Cognac brandies since the 1990s, however, only a small amount of wine is grown and so 'normal' agriculture plays the dominant role in the economic life of the communities.

Attractions

Some parishes have a Romanesque church (e.g. Corme-Écluse , Talmont ); There are also several castles from the 15th to 18th centuries. Century, but most of them are privately owned and cannot be visited. Some remains of megalithic dolmens can also be seen.
