Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan - View of the town with the church

Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan is a southwestern French municipality with 3204 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan is located on the northeast bank of the Gironde not far from the city of Royan and the municipality of Vaux-sur-Mer (each about 7.5 kilometers southwest) in the historic cultural landscape of the Saintonge .

In the 19th century, Saint-Sulpice-de-Royan consistently had between 800 and 1,000 inhabitants. In the first half of the 20th century, the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture led to a population decline to 500 to 600 inhabitants. In the last few decades the population has increased significantly again, which is mainly due to the significantly lower rents and land prices compared to the city of Royan.

economy

Centuries ago agriculture played the dominant role in the community's economic life. This is one of the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but because of the sales crisis for expensive brandies, hardly any wine is grown any more; the farmers in the area have returned to 'normal' agriculture. Since the 1960s, tourism has played a not insignificant role in the economic life of the place.

history

Little information is available on the history of the place. Traces of a circular Celtic settlement have been discovered in the municipality. In the Middle Ages, the Romanesque church and the place belonged to the manor of the Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Vaux-sur-Mer. In the wars of religion (1562–1598) the church and town were badly damaged.

  • The Catholic parish church of Saint-Sulpice from the 12th / 13th centuries Century belonged for a long time to the Abbey of Saint-Étienne in Vaux-sur-Mer. It is dominated by a mighty square crossing tower , the middle floor of which is surrounded by blind arcades , which are rounded even around the corners. The crossing tower is accompanied by a smaller stair tower on the north side, the pyramidal roof of which shows the stone imitation often found in the Saintonge . The transept and apse were destroyed in the Huguenot Wars; the nave and the west facade were preserved - the latter shows the typical design features of many church buildings in the Saintonge: archivolt portal with accompanying blind portals , bundles of services in the corners and a console frieze to close the lower level. The upper one is not, as is usual, subdivided again - in it there is a comparatively large window with an overlay arch . The single-nave interior consists of two bays in the nave with narrow windows , a raised and domed crossing and the apse, which was renovated in simple forms in the 19th century. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1913 .
  • The Protestant temple from the 1850s used to stand on the outskirts. Compared to the other Protestant churches in Saintonge, it is extremely lavishly designed in neo-Romanesque style : it is an octagonal building with a vestibule protruding outwards with a bell gable attached . The sides of the octagon are illuminated by triple windows of different heights. The interior of the building, spanned by an open roof structure - with the grandstand - has a capacity of around 450 people. As one of the few Protestant churches in France, it has been recognized as a monument historique since 1998 .
