Le Château-d'Oléron is a southwestern French community with 4,184 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the arrondissement Rochefort and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton Île d'Oléron . The inhabitants are called Casteloleronais or Chapelains .

geography

Le Château-d'Oléron is the second largest town on the island of Île d'Oléron . It is located directly on the east coast of the island in the Atlantic , facing the continent . Le Château-d'Oléron is surrounded by the neighboring communities Dolus-d'Oléron in the north and west, Saint-Trojan-les-Bains in the south and Le Grand-Village-Plage in the south-west.

history

Le Château-d'Oléron has always been a strategically important place. While the English had already used the place as a trading post from the 12th century, it was used by the Protestants as a retreat during the Huguenot Wars.
