Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is a western French municipality with 3719 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Rochefort and the Canton of Île d'Oléron . The inhabitants are called Saint-Georgais (es) .
geography
Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is located in the northern part of the Île d'Oléron , the second largest French island. Saint-Georges-d'Oléron is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Denis-d'Oléron in the north and north-west, La Brée-les-Bains in the north and north-east and Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron in the south. The Atlantic coast is to the west and east of the municipality.
The municipality includes the towns of Le Douhet , Notre Dame en l'Isle , Plaisance-Foulerot , Sauzelle , Boyardville ; Chaucre , Domino and Les Sables Vignier .
history
Since the Middle Ages, Saint-Georges-d'Oléron has belonged to the von Forz (or Vivonne) family as a fief. Until 1951, La Brée-les-Bains was part of the municipality.
