Soubise is a French commune with 2,998 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the Arrondissement of Rochefort and the Canton of Tonnay-Charente . The community is a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Sud Charente .

geography

The place is on the south bank of the Charente estuary between Rochefort and the Atlantic .

history

Soubise used to be an important transit station as a crossing over the Charente. In September 1346 the place was conquered by Henry of Grosmont . In 1667 the Seigneurie Soubise for the House of Rohan was raised to a principality (see Prince of Soubise ).
