Port-des-Barques is a French commune with 1,777 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Charente-Maritime in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Rochefort and the canton of Tonnay-Charente (until 2015: canton of Saint-Agnant ). The inhabitants are called Portbarquais .
geography
Port-des-Barques is about nine kilometers west of Rochefort at the mouth of the Charente in the Atlantic ( Bay of Biscay ). Port-des-Barques is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Fouras in the north, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Prée in the northeast, Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente in the east and Saint-Froult in the south. The Île Madame, connected by a dam (the Passe aux bœufs ) , also belongs to the municipality .
history
In 1947, the municipality was separated from today's neighboring commune of Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente and became independent.
