from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nikolaus Wynmann (* 1510 in Saanen ; † around 1550) was a Swiss humanist and teacher of ancient languages (especially Hebrew ) at the University of Ingolstadt .

Life

After studying and working in Zurich , Breslau and Vienna , he became a language teacher at the University of Ingolstadt, and later in Tübingen . Correspondence between him from Basel and Erasmus from Rotterdam has come down to us in 1531 . He is particularly well known for having written the world's first swimming book with Colymbetes, Sive De Arte Natandi . In his book, however, Wynmann assumes that swimming is still considered something unusual, even if in Zurich on Limmatquai it is a matter of course for children to jump into the water and swim. One in the Danubedrowned boy was beaten with rods as a corpse, the usual punishment for swimming. Wynmann recommends a swimming technique like a frog (= breaststroke). Since Wynmann teaches swimming pragmatically with aids and does not deal with the physics of swimming like Everard Digby , he initially practiced swimming in the chest style and with buoyancy aids . Wynmann also dealt with wrestling .
