The Salzburg Cathedral Square with the now accessible cathedral arches

With the construction of the cathedral quarter and the corresponding adaptation of the premises, several rooms that had previously been closed to the public were made accessible, namely the structural connections between the Salzburg Residence , the cathedral and the convent wing of the St. Peter monastery (the so-called Cathedral arches), on the west side of the square the so-called Wallistrakt between the building of the monastery and the residence (which until then was used by the University of Salzburg ) and finally a connection from the residence to the Franciscan church , which in the newly designed tour gives an insight into the Church from an unusual perspective.

The exhibits of the Salzburg Baroque Museum , which was closed in 2012 and which had been incorporated into the Salzburg Museum , were integrated into the cathedral quarter, and the exhibits from St. Peter's Abbey were presented to the general public for the first time.

The Salzburger Domplatz (seen from the cathedral entrance) - on the left the convent wing of the St. Peter monastery with the long gallery , in the middle the so-called Wallistrakt of the residence with exhibits of the museum St. Peter, on the right the residence u. a. with the splendid Carabinieri Hall; in the background the Franciscan Church

The complex currently includes the following objects and collections:

The museum area is around 15,000 m², on which 2000 exhibits can be seen.

Business and marketing

Construction of the museum complex began in 2006. The costs of around 8.5 million euros - including around 800,000 euros for security devices - were mainly borne by the city and state of Salzburg and, to a lesser extent, by the Archabbey of St. Peter, the University of Salzburg and the Cathedral Church Fund.

The cathedral quarter was opened on May 17, 2014; In mid-November 2014, the 100,000th visitor was counted.

The economic management of the DomQuartier was initially incumbent on ARGE DomQuartier , in which the following operators were involved:

  • Salzburg castles and palaces management
  • Residenzgalerie Salzburg
  • Cathedral Museum of the Archdiocese of Salzburg
  • Archabbey of St. Peter
  • Salzburg Museum

In April 2016, the DomQuartier was converted into a GmbH in which the State of Salzburg, the Cathedral Church Fund and the St. Peter Abbey each hold a third. The name of the company is now DomQuartier Salzburg GmbH . Elisabeth Resmann is the managing director of the Domquartier.

In the conception and marketing of the museum, the splendid history of Salzburg at the time of the Salzburg prince-archbishops is connected; the Baroque era is therefore a dominant theme . Mainly topic-related tours, offers for children and young people as well as events and special exhibitions in the residence are advertised. The marketing costs are covered by the budget of the cathedral quarter and by the tourism organizations of the city and state of Salzburg.

The term Quartier for 'Quarter' - in conjunction with the second word meaning 'Accommodation' - is considered attractive at the beginning of the 21st century and is perceived as a contemporary name for cultural institutions and art collections, so this word is also used in the name of these Salzburg residents Institution is used. The spelling of the proper name DomQuartier appears with the CamelCase Q , it is deemed word mark and was adopted from the beginning of the media. To be precise, there is a narrow space between the word parts Dom and Quartier , so that the name is actually spelled in the form of a compound with spaces .
