history

In the valley of the Ruisseau du Pintre, dolmens can be seen, which are evidence of early settlement of the area. The Romans covered the country with military camps . So they set up one in what is now the municipality. The village developed along a Roman road . In 1984 the remains of a rich villa were also found.

During the Middle Ages , the village was protected by a moth with a tower and a wide moat. In the 13th century the village was at the heart of the clashes in the Hundred Years War between the English and French feudal lords . Bournel was in English hands at this time as part of the Montaut Seigneurie . Legend has it that the fallen were buried in the castle after a battle between English troops and the Seigneur von Biron. During excavations in 1866, among other things, a flat stone was discovered, under which black ash was found.

In 1259, the Bastide of Castillonnès received part of the parish of Bournel. Nevertheless, the Seigneur von Bournel used his fiefdom, whose privileges he no longer legally had. The Seneschal of Castillonnès condemned him. to hand over the parish. Since the latter refused, there was a dispute in which the troops of the Seigneur von Bournel were defeated. On October 10, 1283, the French king called the two opponents together to reach an arbitration, which ultimately resulted in a division of the parish based on the natural boundary of the course of the Ruisseau du Pintre. At the end of the 15th century the manor of Montaut passed into the hands of the Gontaud-Biron family.
