history
The etymology of Cahuzac goes back to antiquity , but no archaeological investigation has shown any evidence of settlement in this period. The parish of Saint-Martin de Cahuzac is first mentioned in the scriptures in 1153. It developed after the Benedictines cleared the Abbey of La Sauve-Majeure . In this 12th century there was already a manorial rule . However, it was not until the 14th century that a castle was built and the parish merged with that of Saint-Surin in 1340, now a hamlet of the municipality of Cahuzac.
In the 16th century, Cahuzac was the seat of a baronate that included twelve parishes and owned by the Estissac family. The records mention that Jean d'Estissac donated several lands to his faithful Jean de Bideran and allowed him to found a noble house. During the following century the baronate passed into the hands of the Rochefoucauld family , who retained the privileges until the French Revolution .
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 630 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 215 inhabitants during short recovery phases by the 1970s, before the growth phase that began today still persists.
